LES PAPILLONS D’AFRIQUE is a mixed group of charming, chatty and lively ladies (guys are invited, but don’t seem to cope with the pace) that are trying to improve their French language knowledge ….. mainly on the verbal side !!! New members as well as some new ideas are always welcome.  We meet every second Wednesday evening from 18h30 to 21h00 at alternating homes where the hostess supplies a little snack. At the moment we are reading and practicing from a school book. All done at a very easy-going level – everybody adds their bit of knowledge, be it pronunciation – translation – grammar or just general knowledge.  We always have fun und leave feeling good which might also be due to the red wine. Obviously it is not only theory we try to practice, but also a bit of French ‘savoir vivre’.   Au revoir et à bientôt

The Chinese Group meets on Saturday afternoons

Melanie He, new from Beijing, wrote an e-mail saying she would love to meet South Africans who would help her improve her English.

In return she would aid them with English conversation.

A photo in the Sandton Chronicle of Melanie (holding the poster) together with some of the applicants that Rhona dug out from her waiting list which dates from 1997, was the beginning of the Chinese group that meets on Saturday afternoons.

Russian Matryoshka

Resourceful Iga Sudyka, our vice president, is a model of tolerance and intercultural understanding. She studied the most unpopular languages in her native Poland at the time – Russian and German – and gained honors degrees in both.Yearning for freedom, she staged a hair raising escape from the Communist regime and landed in South Africa in 1980.Here she started a German language school, which she still runs, and when she heard of Lingo Links, she saw a way of keeping her Russian alive. But where to find members? A visit to the Orthodox Church in Midrand was the first step towards the little group called Matryoshka after the popular wooden dolls that stack. She speaks fluent Afrikaans and finds time to participate in Spanish and French conversation circles, languages that she says she is still trying to master.

Coccinelles ( Wednesday am French/English circle)

Coccinelles (ladybirds), one of the oldest groups, slowly shrank after the sad and sudden passing away in 2010 of Susanne Kausch, who had been convener for many years.

After a year in recess, Coccinelles has regrouped and now meets on Thursday mornings.

Les Joyeux Lurons

Daniel is a very special person – he’s full of enthusiasm and fun and we all enjoy his amusing anecdotes, of which he has many; the tales of his life in Morocco as a young man; and more recently his accounts of his travels abroad.  He has a keen interest in current affairs so we are encouraged to discuss many interesting topics.

All the members of our group, Les Joyeux Lurons, join to congratulate him on this very special occasion – his 80th Birthday on 12 May. Well done, Daniel on reaching this milestone and being able to get so much out of life. Enjoy all the years ahead – may you continue be happy and fulfilled, and above all have good health!

From Renate who speaks for Intermeet Merry Mix, the Russian Matryoshka as well as all the other groups:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DANIEL and many, many more!

“Daniel is the Star of Lingo Links” – these are Rhona’s words – and everybody will fully agree! Thank you for your enjoyable and numerous contributions … ever since September 1997 … right from the very birth of Lingo Links!!

Your sense of humour and your friendship are loved and appreciated by all of us.

You are celebrating your 80th Birthday by doing what you always loved – travelling!  We impatiently await your return in order to share your colourful experiences with us and once again make us feel part of your journey.

Oh, and before I forget:  Thank you also for “organizing” our car accident some eight years ago, when I literally bumped into you, and as result, into Lingo Links!

LE COSMOPOLITANE UNDER THE FIG TREE

February 22nd, 2011
Monday am Italian group with Wendy and Vusi, African language teachers

The Monday morning Italian group with Wendy and Vusi, African language teachers

Our small but enthusiastic Italian group, Le Cosmopolitane, met under Rhona’s famous fig tree on a lovely Monday morning.
We were introduced to two delightful teachers of African languages, Wendy and Vusi.
A fascinating discussion followed, which developed into an almost fully- fledged lecture on the history of African syllabic alphabet, African writing in general, and also the origins of mathematics. We felt quite enriched by the experience.

In memory of Susanne

January 16th, 2011

susanne-may-20102

It was with profound sadness that we had to bid farewell to Susanne Kausch, a wonderful friend and enthusiastic and idealistic member of Lingo Links.

Co-founder of Les Coccinelles in 1999, she became convenor in 2003. She also helped create the Italian Gruppo Chiaccierone in 2002, and 3 months before her passing away, established Le Cosmopolitane which meets on Monday mornings.

At the time of the Festival, while she was in hospital in her home country, Switzerland, she was awarded a book of appreciation in absentia.

Susanne seldom missed a meeting, and her stories were always interesting, revealing her astounding

general knowledge, wide interests, originality and profound sense of humour.

As she could not drive, none of the enrichment she brought us would have been possible without Philipp, her eldest son and patient, devoted “taxi man”.

The picture above was taken at the last meeting she attended under the fig tree with the Coccinelles.

It was soon after her 71st birthday.

From Le Cosmopolitane:

We, Le Cosmopolitane, mourn the death of Susanne Kausch. it was a shock to us all. Through her initiative and enthusiasm, our new Italian conversation group came into

being just a few months ago. Her Italian was fluent and she encouraged us to communicate in the language, despite our initial hesitation. We feel we have already improved and will continue meeting every week in the spirit which she instilled in us. Our deep sympathy goes out to Susanne’s family and her many friends.
